John 5:39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;
John 5:40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.
Are you looking for life and even though apparently alive and living recognise something of your very being that isn’t really living.
Humanity was created to have Life.
We often claim to have life but in reality, we are never content with the life we believe we have. Our celebrities never seem to be content and despite having great wealth and fame they have no real contentment and maybe that’s because they haven’t found life.
The search for life has been an age-old activity and for many the search for life continues after death with many of our world’s religions offering the life we can’t find now available after death.
In the first century in the Roman province of Judea many of the Jews continued to pursue the age old activity of searching for life and they believed that life was to be found in their ancient scriptures or what we call “The Old Testament”. They had a reverence for the scriptures because they believed their conformity to scriptures rules and regulations gave them life and yet the Life that they searched for was not to be found in rules and regulations but in Jesus the Anointed. It was these very scriptures that pointed to Jesus as “The Life”
There are many references, prophecies, and types of Christ to be found in the Old Testament scriptures, but these Jewish men of great learning and wisdom would not believe in the Life that came from their own nation.
These learned Jews would have read the blessings for obedience and the curses for disobedience written in the book of Deuteronomy. Despite having read the curses pronounced in this book they failed to identify their own situation under the rule of Rome.
In Deuteronomy 28:64-65 Gods warns that the curse will involve being scattered amongst the nations and coming under their rule resulting in no rest, a trembling heart, failing eyes and anguish of soul.
The nation of Israel was a slave to Rome and yet the Jews failed to see their slavery
John 8:33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”
This utter disbelief of the Jews was prophesied in the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy and is the Jews had recognised their own slavery under Rome and acknowledged that they were under the curse they might have seen the prophecy that pointed to the Life for which the so diligently searched.
In Deuteronomy 28:66 the Septuagint translations (written mid 3rd century BC) says “Your Life shall be hung before your eyes and you shall fear day and night and you will not believe in your Life”
Our modern translations don’t really give use the full and rich meaning of the text. Athanasius of Alexandria who lived from 296–298 – 2 May 373, was the 20th bishop of Alexandria and was a Christian theologian, a Church Father, the chief defender of Trinitarianism against Arianism, and a noted Egyptian leader of the fourth century.
In his beautiful work “On the incarnation” he makes mention of verse and declares it to be understood as a direct reference to Jesus – The Life of the world.
Jesus had been revealed as the Life of Israel and the world at the crucifixion.
There on a wooden cross hung our Life. He is the Life for which we all search.
He is the Life in which all things exist and have their being and yet we look to the created for life when creation points to the true Life – Jesus
Jesus is the Life.
Come to Him so that you may have life.
It’s a conversation away “Jesus I want to start living, I to know you for Life”
