Exodus 28:2 – “You shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.
Did you know that you were created with Glory and Beauty? You can see that in the new born baby … but as we grow it seems to fade or is stolen from us. Sometimes in foolishness we just throw it away!
If you’ve ever been around Christians for a while in church or elsewhere you may have heard references to “being adopted by God” or “adopted into the family of God”. The concept of adoption into the family of God is often an encouraging idea for some but what about those who have experienced family adoption and an adoption that was far from perfect its a different story. We very often have an idea of adoption as the perfect solution to many problems but although some adoptions are wonderful a great number fail with terrible consequences.
I’ve been a foster carer and involved in caring for children who are adopted into new families and I’ve seen wonderful adoptive parents who have lots of love to give. I’ve also had the heartache of knowing of a brother returned “as we only want the sister” and the accounts of adults in the criminal justice system who daily struggle with the pain of a failed adoption.
So what about God and His adoption plan? well it may shock you to know that He doesn’t have an adoption plan because He doesn’t adopt people into His family.
Our modern bible translations use the term adoption when the Greek translation is “placing as sons”. In its entry on “adoption,” Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words (1985) explains that the original Greek word here is “huiothesia … from huios, ‘a son,’ and thesis, ‘a placing,’ akin to tithemi, ‘to place’ ”—so the placing as a son.
The term placing as a son is derived from the cultural concept of a natural born son achieving maturity, citizenship and the status of a full heir of the father.
The Gospel of John makes this very clear that we are born of God. John 1:12-13
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God”
Adoption is a lovely concept and picture for some but when you take Jesus as both your Lord and Saviour … the one who rescues you from the pain of this life…you are given a new life.
Your old life is not scrubbed up and adopted into God’s family…… No! you are literally born into the family of God. A full son and daughter clothed with again with Glory and Beauty.
If your that lost part of God’s creation and want to know what His plan is for you…. its this……. He is extremely fond of you and loving you into new life. He wants to place you as a new born son and daughter into His family.
He wants to give you back …..Glory and Beauty.
He invites your return to Him as your Father and Friend, giving you the full rights of a natural born son and daughter.
He suffered in love for you to make that possible. That you once again have the Glory and Beauty that He created you for.
